Response to Major League Baseball
Fair play in baseball should count not only in the field but also in the factories where baseball apparel and merchandise are made. But currently most baseball promotional products are made in sweatshops.
As one of the largest producers of licensed logo apparel in the world, Major League Baseball can make a decisive difference in the lives of thousands of workers worldwide, including workers in the United States. Sweatfree procurement and licensing standards in baseball would create more demand for decent jobs, benefiting workers in the United States and around the world.
The Pittsburgh Pirates can take advantage of the 2006 All Star Game to publicly announce support for the human rights of sweatshop workers by adopting the We-are-Global-Familee anti-sweatshop resolution proposed by the Pittsburgh Anti-Sweatshop Community Alliance and SweatFree Communities. (WE-ARE-FAMILEE was the 1970s Pirates marketing campaign now associated with the memory of Roberto Clemente.)
Please join us in demanding fair play for workers!
Baseball fans led by Pittsburgh Anti-Sweatshop Community Alliance chanted "Pittsburgh! Bangladesh! Living Wages Now!" and "We love baseball! We hate sweatshops!" at PNC Park during the All Star Game on July 11, 2006.
