We're recently home from our sixth annual gathering, held this year in Washington DC, November 6-8. We kicked off the National SweatFree Summit 2009 on Friday by holding a policy forum on Capitol Hill to start up a conversation on moving toward a federal sweatfree procurement policy. The forum featured Albert Torres, a sewing machine operator who makes soldiers' uniforms for Propper International in Puerto Rico, Miguel Ruiz, a union leader from Nicaragua, along with many other captivating speakers.
Another highlight of the weekend was our panel highlighting examples of current garment worker organizing around the world from China and other Asian countries to Central America to Puerto Rico.
The rest of the weekend was filled with workshops and strategy sessions to build the national sweatfree movement, bringing together forty campaign organizers from around the country.
Many thanks to our major co-sponsors who provided travel scholarships to low-income organizers from around the country or donated in-kind support -- we couldn't have pulled off the event without you! Check out the work of our sponsors by clicking the links below!
